Q & A
Questions – Physiotherapy at Medi-club
Can you see a physical therapist without a doctor’s referral?
Yes. In a private clinic, it is possible to consult a physical therapist directly without a doctor’s referral. However, certain factors may make a referral necessary:
The administrative rules of public health institutions.
The specific conditions of your insurance contract.
Physiotherapy technologists (PTs) can provide follow-up care to a client if they comply with the conditions set out in section 4 of Regulation 94m or when they intervene under section 39.4 of the Professional Code. Only physicians, specialized nurse practitioners, and physiotherapists may refer clients to physiotherapy technologists for treatment.
Private insurance
In most cases, insurance companies cover physiotherapy treatment in private clinics. However:
- Some plans require a doctor’s prescription before reimbursing treatment.
- Some insurance companies require that treatment be provided exclusively by a physiotherapist.
Before your first consultation, it is recommended that you contact your insurer to verify:
- The services covered by your policy.
- The conditions required for treatment reimbursement.
Are physical therapy services covered by insurance companies?
- In public healthcare facilities: Physiotherapy treatments are covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), regardless of the condition being treated. Contact your local facility for information on how to access these services.
- In private clinics: Reimbursement depends on the coverage provided by each insurance policy. It is therefore essential to check with your insurance company before starting treatment to find out which costs are covered.
